Passive Life Safety Fundamentals

Course Description:

This is the first module of the Legacy FM Passive Life Safety Systems course that provides a broad overview of the history and origin of fire protection, the difference between passive and active life safety systems, and why they are important. 

 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the process by which codes are created, modified, or deleted, and demonstrate how to submit a public input on the National Fire Protection Association’s website.
  2. Describe how the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) codify laws as the Conditions of Participation (CoPs) as well as the types of codes and standards CMS enforces.
  3. Name the various accrediting organizations (AOs) that contract with CMS and describe the relationship between AO standards and CMS law.
  4. Explain how typical codebooks and standards are organized, and demonstrate how to navigate the TJC CAHM Manual (Standards) to find crucial information.
  5. Name the major Joint Commission (TJC) Standards chapters relevant to healthcare facilities, and describe some of their relevant inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) requirements, including written documentation.
