CMS Conditions of Participation (CoP) Overview

Course Description:
Facilities management is a complex and diverse field comprised of finance, administration, operations and maintenance, troubleshooting, compliance, and more. This course provides an overview of facilities management with a focus on how these team members contribute to a safe healing environment while representing CommonSpirit Health’s values and mission. Participants will also learn how facilities management relates to and supports other departments including safety, security, emergency management, and environmental management.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the process by which codes are created, modified, or deleted, and demonstrate how to submit a public input on the National Fire Protection Association’s website.
- Describe how the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) codify laws as the Conditions of Participation (CoPs) as well as the types of codes and standards CMS enforces.
- Name the various accrediting organizations (AOs) that contract with CMS and describe the relationship between AO standards and CMS law.
- Explain how typical codebooks and standards are organized, and demonstrate how to navigate the TJC CAHM Manual (Standards) to find crucial information.
- Name the major Joint Commission (TJC) Standards chapters relevant to healthcare facilities, and describe some of their relevant inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) requirements, including written documentation.
