The main components of a chiller are the following:
- evaporator
- compressor
- condenser
- expansion valve
The evaporator uses refrigerant to absorb heat from the building’s water, cooling it down. The compressor increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant. The condenser absorbs heat from the refrigerant, and sends this heat outside for rejection. Finally, the expansion valve (often a thermal expansion valve) reduces the refrigerant’s pressure and temperature before it re-enters the evaporator.
